    Webinar Summary

    One year on from the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in Europe, the legal issues arising for the real estate industry have been numerous and the response and legal initiatives in the different European jurisdictions have been diverse. Taking stock after 12 months, this ULI webinar will provide a comparative overview of the many challenges faced, with a specific focus upon the impact that the last year has had upon lettings and loans.

    The three major markets of UK, France and Germany will be covered by Carol Hopper, Shareholder, London Real Estate Sector Group at Greenberg Traurig, Françoise Maigrot, Partner at Linklaters and Florian Rösch, Shareholder and Chair Real Estate Germany at Greenberg Traurig.

    The webinar will be moderated by Lisette van Doorn, CEO, ULI Europe and the panel will also include legal experts from Belgium, Italy, Netherlands, Poland and Portugal to provide a comparative overview and respond to questions raised by the challenges of the past year.

    Agata Jurek-Zbrojska is a Shareholder based in Warsaw. She is a qualified legal advisor and holds a master’s degree in economics. She has more than 15 years of experience in advising clients from around the world on the CEE real estate market. During her career she has also gained experience in other jurisdictions, i.e. in Germany and Spain. Agata has participated in the biggest transactions on the Polish market as well as in many cross-border transactions in Europe. The value of the transactions she has advised on amounts to billions of Euro. She specializes in real estate transactions. She helps clients to strategically structure real estate deals and prepares joint venture contracts.

    Jan Kees Brandse

    Jan Kees Brandse is based in Amsterdam. He is a legal and strategic advisor with many years of experience in the real estate industry, with a focus on commercial, residential and hospitality transactions for investment managers, private equity and private wealth clients. His wide range of experience encompasses transactional corporate and real estate work, structuring of investment vehicles and unwinding of joint ventures, the organization of private and public bids, general business law support, and contract work. He is member of several executive and non-executive boards in the industry.

    Diogo Santos

    Head of the Real Estate practice in Portugal, Linklaters LLP

    Diogo Plantier Santos is the head of the Linklaters’ Real Estate practice in Portugal. He has over 15 years’ experience advising international and domestic corporations, banks and financial institutions, private equity firms and a variety of funds and alternative investment providers on a wide range of real estate transactions, including acquisitions and divestments and sale and leaseback operations, both in Portugal and in cross-border mandates. Diogo also advises on asset management, property development and construction projects. His recent experience further includes advising on the legal impacts of the Covid-19 outbreak and the State of Emergency and other lockdown measures in the retail sector in Portugal. Diogo is ranked by the main international legal directories, being praised for his cross-border expertise.

    Carol Hopper is a Shareholder in the London office and advises funds, investors, bank and non-bank lenders, and corporate clients on a wide array of domestic and international real estate transactions. She acts for investors at all levels of the capital stack and across the full risk spectrum. Carol has over 30 years of experience working on real estate deals in a wide range of sub-sectors, including office, retail, industrial, residential, hotel/ leisure, education, infrastructure/energy (particularly energy-from-waste and windfarms), and public/private finance transactions.

    Florian Rösch

    Shareholder, Greenberg Traurig

    Florian Rösch is a Shareholder and chairs the firm's German Real Estate Sector Group. He focuses his practice on real estate and corporate law, with a focus on real estate transactions and real estate developments. Florian also represents clients in joint venture situations and ongoing asset management work, including leasing. Florian also works as a notary with a focus on all kind of real estate and corporate notarizations. He works for domestic and foreign investors, asset management companies, developers, and the public sector. His experience includes office and retail properties, hotels and nursing homes as well as residential properties. The leading legal publishing house JUVE recommends Florian as “outstanding” and “very skilled”.

    Francoise Maigrot

    Partner, Head of French Real Estate , Linklaters LLP

    Françoise is head of Linklaters’ real estate practice in Paris and one of the leading real estate practitioners on the French market. She has a long-standing expertise in real estate transactions and specialises in French real estate and construction law, as well as environmental and planning law and has particular expertise in complex transactions which require joint real estate, corporate, financial and tax input. She acts for French and many high-profile international clients in all areas of mainstream domestic and cross-border transactions including investors, end users and developers. Her activities include pure investment work and the development and letting of operational space for users. She also has experience in creating international property funds, on the acquisition of large portfolios, dealing with SIIC and OPCI and also in real estate financing.

    Federico Barbàra

    Federico Barbàra is a Shareholder in the Milan office with a long time and extensive experience in domestic and international real estate; he advises national and international clients, including re-funds, in a wide range of transactions (acquisition, disposal, development, management of real estate assets and real estate portfolios) having any level of complexity (acquisition of assets through NPL purchase or bankruptcy procedure, partnerships etc). He is competent in all practices ancillary and/or related to real estate as real estate restructuring, construction agreements, commercial leases, real estate finance, fund rules. He also advises on Hospitality and Leisure transactions.

    Yves Moreau

    Real Estate Partner, Brussels, Linklaters LLP

    Yves has been a partner since 1999, Head of the Real Estate Department since May 2007 and Linklaters’ Global Head of Real Estate from January 2011 until March 2017. He has significant experience in real estate investments and divestments, real estate public procurements, construction law, M&A, notarial law, projects, real estate companies, real estate financing and taxation, registration duties and the structuring of real estate projects and joint ventures. Yves also has extensive experience in the field of leasing (financial and/or VAT) and lease agreements (office, residential and commercial). He advises the main Belgian (financial) lessors as well as companies (as lessees) in the context of the setting up (or dismantling) of complex (financial) leasing transactions. He handles both real estate (sale, long-term lease, leasing, split-structure, etc.) and corporate real estate transactions.

    Lisette van Doorn

    Chief Executive Officer, Europe, Urban Land Institute

    As chief executive of ULI Europe, Lisette van Doorn is responsible for the development of the Institute’s activities across the region, including its renowned pan-European conferences and over 250 local meetings and events across 15 National Councils. She is responsible for working with ULI’s staff both locally and globally to deliver more high profile content and reports; coordinating Advisory Services panels and Urban Plan; and expanding the Institute’s thought leadership across Europe. Van Doorn joined ULI in January 2015 from LIRE, her own consultancy business, which advises international institutional real estate investors and fund managers on strategy, organisational optimisation and portfolio structuring. Prior to this, van Doorn was country manager for CBRE Global Investors where she managed a €1.6bn portfolio of assets in Italy and fund manager of two shopping centre funds (€ 1.3 billion) with assets in Spain, Portugal and Italy. Before joining CBRE Global Investors, van Doorn was founding chief executive for INREV, the European association for Investors in Non-Listed Real Estate Vehicles for four and a half years. Van Doorn started her career at ING Investment Management, where she held account manager and assistant controller positions before being made managing director of research & strategy for ING Real Estate Investment Management Europe.
