ULI Europe Retail Product Council Day: The Retail Property Industry – Today

The session will cover the following questions surrounding the "The Retail Property Industry - Today":
Alasdair Murdoch, CEO, Burger King UK. Alasdair heads up Burger King GBK as CEO. Prior to that he was at GBK and has had a wealth of experience within the restaurant industry. Alasdair spent most of his career with Yum brands; however, he started out well-over 20 years ago as an area manager for Taylor Walker, before moving across to Pizza Hut UK in 1995, where he worked in operations, and in 2000 became operations director for the delivery brand, where he oversaw the renaissance of the delivery channel. From there he moved to KFC as operations director for two years in the UK before moving to France as Managing Director of the Pizza Hut business. He came back to the UK in 2006 to become CEO of Pizza Hut UK for three years. He then moved to head up Pizza Express’ international business based out of Barcelona. In 2010 he was part of the team that took The Clapham House Group private and from there he took GBK through to a successful exit in 2016. He was part of the team, with Bridgepoint, that bought the Master Franchise for Burger King in The UK in 2017. In the past couple of years, he has overseen consolidation and the turnaround of the Burger King business, moving from an estate of 70 restaurants to over 140 with well over 20 due to open in 2020. He has helped drive innovation, like for like sales, brand awareness and better engagement by customers through a number of successful brand campaigns. On a lighter note, Alasdair lives in Hampshire where he relaxes by farming, raising cattle, chickens and growing cereals. He is mad for his skiing and his family.
Vijay Talwar, CEO EMEA, FootLocker Inc. Vijay Talwar is an accomplished multinational business leader with 25+ years of broad industry experience in consumer products, online, sports and retail sectors encompassing both emerging and premium brands. In 2019 Vijay was promoted to CEO, Foot Locker EMEA, becoming an executive officer of Foot Locker, Inc. In his role Vijay focuses on driving productivity and capitalizing on growth opportunities, while furthering an elevated multi-channel experience across this important geography. Vijay is responsible for guiding strategic direction and vision for the Foot Locker EMEA, including franchise operations. In 2016, Vijay joined Foot Locker, Inc. as President - Digital and overseeing the portfolio of Footlocker.com digital businesses including Champs Sports, Foot Action, Eastbay and Six:02. Vijay has served as the CEO, CFO and President of International at Blue Nile. He joined Blue Nile in 2010 and started the International division at Blue Nile. From 2008 to 2010, Vijay was the Chief Executive Officer of the William J. Clinton Foundation India, a global 501c nongovernmental organisation established to provide healthcare and sustainability programs across India and South Asia. From 2002 to 2008, Vijay worked at Nike, Inc, where Vijay served as the Chief Operating Officer for the Central Europe, Middle East and Africa. Prior to that role, he served in multiple finance, strategy and business development roles at Nike. Prior to Nike, Vijay was a Consultant at Bain & Company, a global management consulting firm. Vijay holds an MBA from the University of Chicago.

James Brown, Chief Research Officer, JLL James leads JLL Research & Strategy across EMEA. The Research & Strategy team works closely with colleagues across the region, tracking and monitoring sectors and markets, from an occupier and investor perspective. In addition to tracking local market fundamentals and dynamics, the team is focused on generating insights into the future of Enterprise, Capital and Cities. In particular, Retail was well progressed on the journey of structural change and COVID-19 will act as a further accelerator. Working with colleagues and clients, James and the team are monitoring the impact of COVID-19 and mapping the outlook for Retail in the short and longer term. James spends all his free time with his wife, two daughters and dog; family and friends, in person or virtually as government guidance allows. Andy Watson is co-chair of the ULI Retail and Entertainment Product Council. Currently a Partner and Fund Manager at Europa Capital, Andy was formerly Managing Director and Chief Investment Officer for Continental Europe at LaSalle Investment Management as well as a founder of The Retail Consulting Group. After 5 years in Germany in the early 1990’s, he has now lived and worked in France for 25 years. Andy, a graduate of the University of Oxford, is Publisher and Author of “A Thousand Days in Berlin – Tales of Property Pioneering” (2017).
