    Nurturing Urban Connections: How to create positive impact and sustainable urban transformation in Berlin and London. 

    Drawing from experiences and creating synergies in the world of real estate and urban development is at the root of continuous expansion and sustainability. This year, the ULI Sister Cities initiative will focus on two cities for its inaugural in-person event: Berlin and London – two beautiful and vibrant cities that have contributed tremendously to the development of real estate and the sophistication of urbanism in the world.

    Speakers

    Sascha Haselmayer

    Ashoka

    Sascha Haselmayer trained as an architect and is a serial social entrepreneur, author, speaker, and lecturer at leading institutions. He has advised leading philanthropies, transnational organisations, and think tanks, and through the organisations he established, Sascha has helped 150 global cities solve problems in new ways. With Citymart, for example, he created a new approach to city procurement that opened up local spending to tens of thousands of social entrepreneurs, community organisations, and innovators in Barcelona, Lagos, New York City, Rio de Janeiro, London and many others. Sascha serves on the board of the social entrepreneurship network in Germany and is a Partner at Ashoka Innovators for the Public, where he helps realise the vision of creating a world where everyone is a changemaker. He is author of “The Slow Lane: Why Quick Fixes Fail and How to Achieve Real Change” and in 2011, he was awarded the prestigious Ashoka Fellowship. In 2020, Sascha also became a New America Fellow and a non-resident Fellow at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs.

    Phil Haddleton

    Senior Director, BentallGreenOak

    Real estate investor and award winning developer, (re)creating and managing world class buildings designed with the future in mind. Full cradle to grave investor: origination, transactions, development management, asset management and leasing. Mandates include Welput (the largest unlisted specialist central London fund) and various separate account projects.

    Arlen Stawasz

    Gensler

    Arlen Stawasz is Regional Resilience Leader for Gensler in the EU and has focused his career on resilience planning for zero-net energy, carbon, and water-focused architectural design. He has expertise in flood resilient architecture, climate adaptation / social equity strategy, and emergency disaster response systems – working with many communities on multiple projects at various scales across the globe. In addition, Arlen has conducted extensive research in many countries to learn from the most advanced water-focused societies and their unique conditions of living with water and extreme heat. Arlen serves as an adjunct faculty member of the Boston Architectural College with a focus on teaching advanced resilient design and climate adaptation architectural studios.

    Assem El Alami

    Head of Real Estate Finance, Berlin Hyp AG

    I am the Head of the Real Estate Finance Sales Division of Berlin Hyp AG. As such I supervise four sales teams: Origination International Investors based in Berlin, as well as the offices in Paris, Amsterdam and Warsaw. Being a law graduate, I have more than 25 years of experience in the real estate sector of which I spent 10 years in France. I joined Berlin Hyp in 2010. Berlin Hyp is a wholly owned subsidiary of LBBW and specialises in large-volume real estate financing for professional investors and housing companies. It also provides German savings banks with a comprehensive range of products and services. Sustainability has been a central component of the Bank’s business strategy for years. It plays a pioneering role on the capital market in the development of sustainable refinancing products. At the same time, the Bank also promotes the financing of sustainable real estate in order to help drive the transformation of the real estate market and contribute to achieving the goal of climate neutrality. Berlin Hyp’s clear focus, more than 150 years of experience and the ability to actively shape digital transformation in the real estate sector characterise the Bank as a leading German real estate and Pfandbrief bank.

    Boris Schran

    Founding Partner, Peakside Capital Advisors AG

    Mr. Schran has over 20 years of experience in the real estate industry. Prior to founding Peakside, Mr. Schran was a Director in the Real Estate Principle Investment division at Bank of America Merril Lynch (BAML) and responsible for origination and acquisition since 2008. From 2005 until 2008, Mr. Schran was an Executive Director at Morgan Stanley, where he was responsible for asset management and origination in Germany and served as board member of a German residential company with about 48,000 apartments and 400 employees. Prior to Morgan Stanley, Mr. Schran was the Managing Director of the Archon Group Deutschland (part of Goldman Sachs) and the head of development at Vivico, a major German developer, for Southern Germany.
